Buffalo Bills Will Hold Private Workout With Matt Barkley

Having already worked out four of the top quarterbacks in this year’s NFL draft class, the Buffalo Bills are turning their attention to USC’s Matt Barkley.
The Bills will hold a private workout for Barkley and former Trojans receiver Robert Woods in Los Angeles on Monday, according to ESPN.com’s James Walker.
Buffalo holds the No. 8 overall pick in the first round, as well as the No. 41 overall pick in the second round — closer to where Barkley is projected to go. The team released starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier this month, but could focus its draft on the defensive side of the ball after allowed 27.2 points per game last season.
Buffalo has held private workouts for West Virginia’s Geno Smith, Florida State’s E.J. Manuel, Oklahoma’s Landry Jones and Tennessee’s Tyler Bray.
But the team could have particular interest in Barkley, who threw for 3,273 yards and 36 touchdowns during his senior season, given first-year head coach Doug Marrone’s affinity for him.
From CBSSports.com:
After facing Barkley twice over the last two seasons while at Syracuse, Bills first-year coach Doug Marrone raved about the former Trojans’ quarterback’s comfort-level within a pro-style system. In the two wins, Barkley went 49 of 69 (71.0 percent) for 511 yards with 11 touchdowns and only one interception. In a 38-17 win in September of 2011, Barkley checked down to his running backs four times when the Orange eliminated his deep option downfield.
“If he doesn’t like what’s going on when they (take away) the deep vertical threats, he can come right back to the backs,” said Marrone, days before the Orange’s 42-29 loss to the Trojans in September. “That’s one of the things you see with the top guys in the NFL.”
Marrone even indicated that Barkley could have been the first quarterback selected behind Andrew Luck if he entered the Draft last season. If selected by the Bills, Barkley’s experience with a short-passing game and his proficiency in making pre-snap adjustments could help him fit within Marrone’s West Coast offense.

Buffalo Bills Sign Kevin Kolb "The Bills Are Terrible"

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)

The quarterback-needy Buffalo Bills have turned their attention to free-agent Kevin Kolb.
Now that NFL free agency is open, who is signing where? Find out in our updating blog.
A person familiar with talks said Saturday night that the Bills are close to completing a deal to sign the sixth-year player. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of discussions.
ESPN.com first reported that a deal between the two sides was close.
Kolb spent the past two seasons in Arizona, where injuries hampered his opportunity to prove himself as a starter. The Cardinals were left with little choice but to release Kolb on March 15 in a move that came before they were set to pay the player a $2 million roster bonus and saved the team about $7 million in salary cap space.
The Bills are in no position to be choosy. They're down to one experienced quarterback on their roster — Tarvaris Jackson — after releasing returning starter Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier this month.
General manager Buddy Nix has also expressed an intention to select a quarterback high in the draft next montFeed your NFL addiction! Come feast on all the news in our updating blog.
The Bills are once again in rebuilding mode under rookie coach Doug Marrone, who took over in January after Chan Gailey was fired following three losing seasons. Marrone is an offensive specialist, who spent the past four seasons reviving a struggling football program at Syracuse.
Kolb was being counted on by the Cardinals to become their franchise quarterback by acquiring him in a trade with Philadelphia in the summer of 2011. They then signed Kolb to a five-year, $63 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.
Kolb, however, got off to a 1-6 start and had trouble adapting to coach Ken Whisenhunt's offense. He then hurt his toe and was eventually sidelined for the rest of the season because of a concussion.
Last season, Kolb helped the Cardinals get off to a 4-0 start before being sidelined for the rest of the season with torn rib cartilage.
Kolb has struggled with consistency. He has completed 59.5 percent of his passes, while throwing 28 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 34 career games.

5 WRs Buffalo Bills Should Draft In 2013 NFL Draft

Hi-res-157285080_crop_exact Steve Dykes/Getty Images
Eric Frenz - Just like last year, the Buffalo Bills are looking for help at wide receiver.
The only difference is, this year, the Bills need to make additions at the position. As of March 19, the Bills have five wide receivers on the active roster with a combined nine years experience among them. Stevie Johnson is the only Bills receiver with more than two years of NFL experience.
So clearly, they could stand to add talent at the position.
By now, you're all familiar with Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (if not, get familiar here). He is the consensus best receiver in the 2013 draft class. It's basically Patterson and the rest of the pack.
What if the Bills don't go after Patterson, though? Who's a fit?
The drop-off is minimal in the middle rounds. That presents plenty of opportunities to get good value on a talented receiver who may not be a finished product but has plenty of upside.
Here's a short list of names to familiarize yourself with as we approach the draft.

Markus Wheaton, Oregon State
Height: 5'11"Weight: 189 lbs.
Projected Round: mid-to-late second
Strengths: Wheaton has elite quickness, which he showcased at the combine with a 4.02-second 20-yard shuttle, and solid long speed with a 4.45-second 40-yard dash.
He's at his best when given room to work: lined up in the slot, on screen passes, drag routes, etc., but he's still experienced at getting off jams, having practiced against Oregon State's press-coverage cornerbacks.

Weaknesses: He can shake defenders in the open field, but he is too often taken down by arm tackles, failing to gain yards after contact.
Most scouts have two issues with his game: He rounds off his cuts and drops catchable passes. Those are both technique issues, which can be resolved, and he has proven capable of being productive despite those limitations.

Stedman Bailey, West Virginia
Height: 5'10"Weight: 193 lbs.
Projected Round: late second to early third round
Strengths: Like Wheaton, Bailey also showed off his top-end quickness with a 6.81 three-cone drill and a 4.09 20-yard shuttle. He's built like a running back, which makes him tough to bring down in the open field. His size will be a concern for some teams, but his comparisons to Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith are indicative of why his size may not matter.
He has the long speed to be a downfield threat, and he tracks the ball well on deep passes, but his overall quickness and route-running savvy make him a great threat over the middle and on short and intermediate routes.
He's incredibly physical, fighting to win leverage and create separation. His soft hands allow him to make any catch, whether in traffic or when tracking the ball on a deep pass.

Weaknesses: Bailey lacks many of the traits of a No. 1 receiver: size, speed, leaping ability etc. His explosiveness (or lack thereof) isn't enough to beat defenders on its own.
Although it's not necessarily considered a weakness, scouts need to keep in mind the attention being paid to his teammate Tavon Austin. Pair Bailey with a good No. 1 receiver, and that blemish is a nonissue.

Ryan Swope, Texas A&M
Height: 6'0"Weight: 205 lbs.
Projected Round: late third to early fourth
Strengths: Swope had a dynamite combine, running a 4.34 40-yard dash, which put him in the top five at receiver. He's far from just being a track star, though, putting up consistent numbers throughout his career in College Station, with over 70 receptions and 800 yards in each of the past three seasons.
He's not incredibly big, but at 6'0" and 205 pounds, he's still bigger than most NFL cornerbacks. His stocky frame translates well to the field and also makes him a solid blocker in the running game.
He is well versed in running all the short and intermediate routes he'll be asked to run as part of the Bills' West Coast offense, and his quickness allows him to gain separation on those routes.

Weaknesses: His long speed doesn't necessarily translate perfectly to the field—he's not going to blow by defenders on a consistent basis. He doesn't have the quickness to elude defensive backs in the open field, and he doesn't have the strength to run over linebackers and safeties over the middle.
In addition to adding a little size to his frame, Swope could stand to improve his physicality both in running routes and in blocking.

Aaron Dobson, Marshall
Height: 6'3"Weight: 210 lbs.
Projected Round: late third to early fourth
Strengths: Dobson is the first receiver on this list who stands more than 6'0" tall. He uses his long frame to make difficult catches in jump-ball situations. Best of all, he does it with his hands and not with his body. He has route-running savvy and does a good job setting up his routes.
He's slender, but there is some physicality to his game, as he consistently beats press coverage at the line of scrimmage, makes catches with defenders draped on him and fights through contact for extra yards.

Weaknesses: Dobson is limited to the role of X receiver; he doesn't have the versatility to line up at other spots. He's a strider and takes a little longer to get up to top speed. His quickness isn't elite to help him consistently get open over the middle. Also, he still has to develop as a blocker.
He caught 12 touchdowns as a junior, but just three as a senior, though he averaged 1.7 yards per catch more as a senior than as a junior.

Marcus Davis, Viriginia Tech
Height: 6'3"Weight: 232 lbs.
Projected Round: Day 3
Strengths: Davis makes two straight receivers on this list that are ripe with size. Davis also measured in at 6'3", with 32.25-inch long arms, and had an impressive combine with a 39.5-inch vertical and a 4.56 40-yard dash. He has great quickness and the suddenness to win against press coverage at the line of scrimmage.
As a former quarterback, he has a good understanding of reading coverages and knows how to run a route the way a quarterback would want it to be run. He fits into a West Coast offense because of his great speed in and out of breaks, specifically on slant routes, and because of his ability to create yards after the catch.
Dripping with athleticism, Davis looks like a prospect any coach would be wild about.

Weaknessess: He's new to the position, and as such, far from a finished product.
He lacks polish as a route-runner, and he also fails to consistently catch the ball with his hands, too often letting it get into his body. There are questions regarding his work ethic, as he seemed to "coast at times" with his effort (via CBS Sports).
He also appeared to be out of sync with his quarterback at times, and could put his experience as a quarterback to better use in that regard.

Buffalo Bills Private Workout For QB E.J. Maneul

When Tarvaris Jackson tops the depth chart and your new coach can't name the backup, it's time to go hunting for a quarterback.

The Buffalo Bills tweeted that the team is scheduled to hold a private workout with Florida State's EJ Manuel on Saturday. This comes one day after the Bills were slated to work out West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith.
Smith widely is regarded as the top prospect under center, but Manuel has risen in the eyes of Mike Mayock, the NFL Network draft analyst who vaulted the mobile signal-caller to No. 2, behind Smith, on his position-by-position rankings. Manuel is seen as a raw, but intriguing athlete with experience in the read-option.
"You know I don't like this quarterback class, so if I'm going to make a mistake, I finally decided I'm going to make a mistake with a kid with size, arm talent and athletic ability, and I think that's what Manuel has," Mayock said earlier this month.
This quarterback group is underwhelming, but Bills coach Doug Marrone is aware his cupboard is bare at the position. If you're looking for a team primed to reach for a ho-hum passer at the 2013 NFL Draft, look no further than Buffalo at No. 8.

Cardinals And Bills Are Jockeying For QB Geno Smith

The NFL Draft is still over a month away, and rumors and reports are starting to fly around. What is the most likely rumor? That teams might want to move up to get the player -- specifically a quarterback -- they want. The Arizona Cardinals are in the middle of the latest draft rumor, and it involves quarterback Geno Smith.
According to South Florida Sun-Sentinel writer Omar Kelly, both "Arizona and Buffalo will be jockeying for Geno Smith as a top 10 picks."
Both teams have problems at the quarterback position and the pickings are slim in free agency. As of right now, the best QB on the market is Jason Campbell. Even Smith is not considered by many to be worth a first round pick, but we know that quarterbacks get overdrafted almost every year.
There is one line of thought that says that you have to grab your QB target when you get the chance, while other say that in this draft there is no QB worth taking that high, especially when there is great talent at other positions that are also needs.
For those readers who really want the Cardinals to land Smith, would it be worth trading up to avoid the Bills leapfrogging them and snagging him?
For those who don't want Smith anyway, do you care that Smith is taken before the Cards make their pick?
Naturally, these reports are way too early, but they are out there. They are worth talking about, don't you think?

Four NFL Teams Interested Bills G Andy Levitre

Posted by Chris Brown on March 10, 2013 – 7:43 am

With the negotiating window now entering day 2 reports are circulating about the number of teams in pursuit of Bills impending free agent guard Andy Levitre.
According to a report by the Tennessean the Tennessee Titans are in pursuit of Levitre with additional reports suggesting the San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears have also expressed interest. Indianapolis has been mentioned as a team interested in Levitre’s services too.
Naturally the Bills are also still vying to retain Levitre before he hits the free agent market officially on Tuesday afternoon.
The Chargers interest, which was reported by San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Kevin Acee makes sense for a couple of reasons.

Levitre is a native of Santa Cruz, CA and the Chargers also employ Bills former offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris as their new offensive line coach under new head coach Mike McCoy. D’Alessandris served in the same capacity under former Bills head coach Chan Gailey.
