Dan Pike - 2011 NBA Mock Drafts will start in earnest now that the lottery is set, and while Kyrie Irving appears to be the top prize, the award from Tuesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery goes to Nick Gilbert.
Kyrie Irving is the best player in the 2011 NBA Draft, and is expected to be the top overall pick. However, some wonder if a toe injury will hurt his draft status. He missed all but 11 games of his Freshman year at Duke with a toe and was absent as the Blue Devils won the ACC Tournament. He did attend the lottery in Secacus, NJ though. After all, it is just 20 miles from home.
While Irving was expected to command most of the attention at the NBA Draft Lottery, Nick Gilbert ended up stealing the show. The 14-year-old son of Cleveland Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert was born with a nerve disorder (neurofibromatosis) that causes tumor growth. The elder Gilbert had his “good luck charm” represent the team at the NBA Draft Lottery.
ESPN reporter Heather Cox introduced Nick Gilbert as an Ambassador for the National Children’s Tumor Foundation. When she asked him about being at the lottery and being his dad’s “own personal hero”. His reply was well-received by those in attendance…”Well, I mean, what’s not to like?” After pausing for the laughter from the crowd, he continued “I’m the oldest of five. I have a good life. I’m going through this disease, but I’m going through it well. I’m getting better. Research is [helping] with all the money people are donating. Yeah, everything’s going good.”
Gilbert’s response was poignant in addition to being funny. ”What’s not to like” has become a new mantra for the Cavs organization and fans, showing up on T-Shirts and receiving a push to appear on billboards.
Dan Gilbert’s good luck charm worked wonders for the Cavs, as they were awarded with the first and fourth pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. After the picks were assigned he stated “I guess you couldn’t do any better than this. I guess you could [get] one and two, but we’ll take one and four.”
The Cavs received a second lottery pick after making a considerable financial investment in point guard Baron Davis. A February trade with the Los Angeles Clippers netted Baron Davis and the Clippers’ lottery pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Given Davis’ presence and other needs, is it possible the Cavaliers opt to go a different direction and fill one of their many other needs?
While possible, it is extremely unlikely. A source from the Cavs’ front office confirmed the primary target in the February trade wasn’t Davis, but acquiring the Clippers’ draft pick.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the source told ESPN.com “we know we’re going to have to build this team through the lottery. We hope Baron works out, but our primary focus was the pick. We really wanted two top-10 picks to infuse the team with young talent.”
The Cavs are devoid of star power, and Irving can step in from day one and run the floor. For Cleveland to rebuild the team, they need top-tier players, not “good enough for now.”
Irving is the kind of talent a team can be built around. The overall talent pool is depleted in 2011, thanks in large part to fewer underclassmen entering the draft due to labor uncertainty. But Irving is a top prospect in any draft, and Cavalier fans should revolt if he isn’t the first pick. That said, I can see a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, allowing them to grab Enes Kanter and Brandon Knight.

2011 NBA Playoffs: Will The Celtics Win Game 3?
Celtics Life - The hype is over. We've seen how Miami handled themselves in the first two games and protected their home floor. We can't continue to blame poor or fixed officiating as that's almost a staple every time the Celtics play (more so when they play the Stern-groomed Heat).
Dwayne Wade and LeBron James are definitely a dangerous combination and both had moments when they made even Garnett look like a shell of himself.
Chris Bosh, though still an ostrich, is slowly figuring out his role in this series and making an impact without burying his head in the ground.
We're in a mini-ditch. Not just because of the way Spoelstra's squad has been playing, but how Boston has been executing on both ends of the floor. Who's the veteran team again here?
Don't get me wrong, I'm still optimistic on the whole series but from the way we've been playing and judging the trends ... it's going to take more than a Shaq sighting and a homecooking at Beantown to turn the tables around in our favor.
Everyone has to do their role. Yes Big Baby, starting with you. We gotta get you back to "Ticket Stub" status. But by in large - everyone. Doc Rivers mentioned their offense is not built for one-on-one plays with the exception of Paul Pierce. Their offense is more geared around each other, setting screens, passing the ball and finding the open man for that easy deuce or uncontested three. We can't blame everything on Doc though. He obviously had a hard time in Game 2 on who's willing and able to score due to the ailing injuries of Pierce, Allen and Rondo on the court. KG played big time, but at this point, he can't do it alone.
Boston has been known for its defense but in this series against the Heat, I think they're going to need more on the offensive end. Both teams have proven they can defend well but from this point, if every succeeding game is a close one when it hits the final period, someone has to deliver for the Celtics. Wade and James no question are going to attack the rim again and rack up points or earn it in the charity stripe. Someone has to do the same for the Cs.
It's time to turn the tide. Three days of rest, time to think things over but not think too much. The Heat looks to have exploited our weaknesses and one side of the coin may prove it so. But there's also the other side which is more of the Celtics' own doing. That side they can stop and reverse. That's the part that's completely in their hands.
I'm just happy that we're going home. Not like one team I know who blew their homecourt advantage against that other team in Texas.

Celtics Rip Knicks 96-93
Kevin Garnett made the go-ahead hook shot with 13.3 seconds remaining to lift the Boston Celtics over the New York Knicks, 96-93, in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at TD Garden.
After Jared Jeffries put the Knicks up by one, 93-92, Garnett made a hook shot over Jeffries to put Boston in front.
"I wasn't really in a nice rhythm to be honest. I was just taking what [Jeffries] was giving me," Garnett said. "I just remained calm, went to a shot that I knew I could make."
The Celtics then doubled team Carmelo Anthony, who passed down low to Jeffries. Garnett stole the ball and called a timeout with 4.1 seconds left.
Delonte West made two free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining to ensure Boston emerged with a 2-0 series lead.
Rajon Rondo scored a playoff career-high 30 points to go with seven assists for the third-seeded Celtics, who won 87-85 in Game 1 on Sunday. Paul Pierce added 20 points.
Ray Allen, who buried a three-pointer with 11.6 seconds remaining on Sunday, made four three-pointers en route to 18 points. Garnett ended with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Anthony put New York on his back, tying a playoff career-high with 42 points. He also had 17 boards and six assists for the Knicks, who were without guard Chauncey Billups (knee).
To make matters worse, Amare Stoudemire left the game with back spasms in the second quarter and did not return. He said after the game he suffered the injury during warmups but was "pretty sure [he'll] be ready to go by [Game 3 on] Friday."
Toney Douglas, starting in place of Billups, had 14 points and seven rebounds for New York, which hasn't won a playoff game since 2001.
"Going down the stretch, just looking at it, I probably [have] never been more proud of a team and how they battled the circumstances, how hard they played and how tough they played," Knicks head coach Mike D'Antoni said. "[They were] mentally tough. [We] gave ourselves a chance to win. We just didn't quite do it."
The series shifts to New York and Madison Square Garden on Friday for Game 3.
Anthony made a three-pointer over Pierce with 2:37 remaining to give New York a 91-88 margin. Pierce responded with two free throws at the other end to cut the gap to one.
The Celtics had control of the ball again following Rondo's steal from Douglas. Pierce drove to the hoop and found an open Garnett under the basket, who completed the play with a slam for a 92-91 Boston lead with 1:14 to go.
Jeffries grabbed a big offensive rebound off Roger Mason's missed three- pointer. Following a timeout, Mason missed a driving layup before pulling down his own rebound. Jeffries then drove to the hoop and made his way around Garnett for a layup.
Down by one, 93-92, Garnett called for the ball in the post and made the go- ahead basket with 13.3 seconds left.
The Knicks trailed by 10, 23-13, late in the first quarter, but closed the period out on an 8-0 run. Anthony's three-point play cut New York's deficit to 23-21 after 12 minutes.
A tight second frame featured five lead changes and six ties. The Knicks took a 45-44 edge into the locker room.
New York remained optimistic that Stoudemire could return in the second half. But Shawne Williams started for the injured forward to start the third. The Knicks were able to keep it close until late in the frame, when the team announced that Stoudemire would not return.
Holding a 62-61 edge with under five minutes to go, Boston went on a 12-2 surge. Allen made a three-pointer to spark the burst, which Pierce capped with a pair of jumpers for a 74-63 margin.
Anthony then showed why New York traded for him. He made a jumper and connected on a pair of free throws to get his team within 74-67 heading to the fourth.

Celtics Crush Kincks 87-85 On Ray Allen's 3-Pointer
BOSTON (AP) — Ray Allen hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, Paul Pierce shut down Carmelo Anthony and the Boston Celtics rallied to beat the New York Knicks 87-85 in their playoff opener on Sunday night.
New York led 85-84 before Anthony was called for an offensive foul for pushing Pierce with 21 seconds remaining. Allen, who led the Celtics with 24 points, sank the decisive basket from beyond the left arc.
The Knicks then rushed downcourt and Anthony missed a long 3-point attempt with 2 seconds left. The superstar forward went 1 for 11 from the field in the second half.
Amare Stoudemire had 28 points and 11 rebounds for New York, and Anthony finished with 15.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is set for Tuesday night in Boston.
Pierce scored 18 points and Kevin Garnett added 15 points and 13 rebounds for Boston.
After Anthony's critical offensive foul, Rajon Rondo lined up to inbound the ball but called timeout. The next time, Allen inbounded from just in front of the half-court line on the right side. He threw the ball to Pierce, then circled to the other side of the court, caught Pierce's pass and fired up the deciding basket.
And when Anthony missed and the final seconds ticked away, Celtics coach Doc Rivers high-fived fans as he headed to the locker room.
Third-seeded Boston got a tough challenge from the Knicks, who allowed 105.7 points per game during the regular season, third-most in the league. Pierce was the defensive star for the Celtics, forcing Anthony to shoot with a hand in his face for much of the game.
With the score tied at 82, Toney Douglas hit a 3-pointer to put the Knicks in front with 38 seconds to go. The Celtics called timeout and immediately scored when Rondo tossed an alley-oop to Garnett on the inbounds pass.
The Celtics, who won their NBA-high 17th championship in 2008, are aiming to return to the finals after losing in seven games last year to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Knicks, in the playoffs for the first time in seven years, have lost their last three postseason series and have gone 10 years without a win in a playoff game.
Boston trailed 51-39 at halftime but rallied to take a 66-64 lead early in the fourth. Stoudemire then scored 12 of the Knicks' next 18 points to power them to an 82-78 lead with 2:46 remaining.
Pierce followed with a 15-foot fallaway and Jermaine O'Neal scored on a putback, tying it with 1:12 to play.
It was a rough night for Anthony from the start. He picked up two quick fouls and went scoreless in the first quarter, but ended the half with 12 points.

NBA Player Daniel Gibson Has Shotgun Wedding
Cavaliers guard Daniel “Boobie” Gibson won’t get to pass the ball to LeBron James anymore, but at least he’s got a woman to call his wife now.
Gibson reportedly had a “shotgun wedding” to recording artist/ reality show star Keyshia Cole recently in Malibu, CA.
The couple have a child, Daniel Gibson Jr. who was born in March of this year.

Luxor executive Gene Kilroy was a guest of NBA great Karl Malone’s during the latter’s induction last weekend in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Kilroy was standing with Malone when a man approached pushing a 12-year-old handicapped boy in a wheelchair. The father asked whether Malone would sign an autograph for his son, adding that several former NBA stars had declined. Huffington Post - Jay-Z's relationship with LeBron James has become "strained" after the NBA star decided to join the Miami Heat, the web site MediaTakeout reports. According to the article, James ignored Jay-Z's calls during the days leading up to his announcement.

Fox Sports.com - ESPN pulled an unflattering LeBron James profile story from its website Wednesday, a controversial move for a network that has come under criticism for giving away part of its airtime to the athlete for a primetime special.
The article, by ESPNLosAngeles.com columnist Arash Markazi, depicted James as someone who “relishes being the center of attention” as handlers infantilize the 25-year-old.
“The more you hang around James, the more you realize he’s still a child wrapped in a 6-foot-8, 250-pound frame,” Markazi wrote, according to screengrabs posted on various fan websites.
The article was posted at 9:40 a.m. ET but was pulled shortly thereafter.
That meant it was suddenly more difficult for fans to read about James flirting with Las Vegas cocktail waitresses and fake-dribbling across casinos.
Though constantly surrounded by an entourage of security, family and longtime friends, he was disappointed when a club offered him a male waiter.
“I wish they’d have one of those girls with no panties do that instead of the guy,” he said as a waiter delivered another bottle of vodka.
Even fellow basketball players seemed shocked at James’ behavior.
In one nightclub, Boston Celtics forward Glen Davis walked past James’ group and surveyed the area “like a painting in a museum, soaking in the images of the go-go dancers ... and the costumed man delivering bottles of champagne.”
Davis shook his head, and moved on.

With an eye on how megastars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have held the league's competitive balance in their fickle hands and turned this summer's free-agency period into a three-ring circus, the Nuggets seem determined not to let Anthony do the same in Denver.
While their offer of a hefty contract extension proves the Nuggets hope Anthony will remain the face of the franchise for years to come, the team is prepared to trade Melo rather than let him walk as a free agent next summer, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.
At a salary of $17 million, Anthony is committed to play for Denver during the upcoming season. But here's the rub. Anthony can opt out of his contract next summer, and free agency might appear all the more tempting after seeing the league-wide groveling James has instigated.
As a proactive move, the Nuggets have quietly tried to secure the services of Anthony through 2015 before losers in the pursuit of this talent-laden class of free agents can begin dreaming of Melo.
While a city of Broncomaniacs has obsessed with the contract status of football stars Elvis Dumervil and Champ Bailey, the negotiations between the Nuggets and Anthony might have already reached a more critical stage, because management of the local NBA franchise has shown it is unafraid to make trades involving a marquee player.

New York Knicks Out To Convince Lebron James Not To Join Wade And Bosh
LeBron James is calling the possible union of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and of course, the King himself, "Dream Team."
Those were the words James used when he reached out to another free agent in the past 10 days and pitched the idea of joining them.
"He said, 'Would you be willing to take less to join Dream Team?'" the player, who did not want to be identified, told the Daily News. "He said his people were putting it together."
That conversation lends credence to reports that James will join Bosh and Wade in Miami. In that scenario, Pat Riley will likely return to the sidelines and coach the Heat.
However, there is a twist because with LeBron there always is. There was a report out of Cleveland Tuesday quoting a person close to the Cavs' free agent as saying that the club still has an edge in re-signing him. There were other reports that James is leaning toward joining the Chicago Bulls.
Few, if any, reports give the Knicks much of a chance, and yet the club's brain trust remains confident that it can convince James to make the jump to the NBA's biggest market.
The Knicks will have their much-anticipated meeting with James Thursday afternoon in Ohio, hours after he finally becomes a free agent at midnight. There is a possibility that the sit-down could take place at James' mansion in Akron.
The Nets are batting leadoff and will be followed by the Knicks, whose traveling party includes team president Donnie Walsh, head coach Mike D'Antoni, Garden chairman James Dolan and former player Allan Houston. The Bulls, Clippers, Heat and Cavs have also scheduled meetings with James in Ohio.
The Knicks are fighting long odds in their bid to land James but feel they have several strong selling points - New York City, the flexibility to sign another "max" free agent and enough salary-cap space to add another elite free agent the following summer. The team will also impress upon James that he has a chance to build his brand and establish his legacy by winning in New York.
The tough sell for the Knicks, though, is convincing James that he can win titles in New York. The franchise hasn't raised a championship banner since 1973, and under Dolan's ownership, the club has suffered through nine straight losing seasons. Expect several teams, particularly Riley and the Heat, to stress to James that joining the Knicks could be a career killer.
In fact, the Knicks' old administration is coming back to haunt the Garden. Riley is the most accomplished winner who will sit across from James, and his mere presence is a powerful influence. The fact that Riley is expected to re-sign Wade and will likely sign Bosh makes Miami even more appealing. Former Knicks president Ernie Grunfeld made trades with Chicago and New Jersey over the past five days that gave both teams additional cap space. The Bulls could conceivably add both James and Bosh.

The Knicks' contingent is hoping to have a verbal commitment from Johnson before it leaves to meet LeBron, but the Hawks claim they are prepared to offer Johnson a max contract, which is $30 million more than the Knicks can offer. When the Knicks do meet with James, the two-time MVP will be joined by his business manager, Maverick Carter, and his agent, Leon Rose. Tuesday, Carter was quoted in the New York Times saying that NBA power broker William Wesley, otherwise known as "World Wide Wes," will not sit in on the meeting and that "Wes has nothing to do with where he goes."
Wesley's exclusion could be a bad sign for the Bulls, the team believed to be the one Wesley is trying to convince James to join. However, the Knicks also have a relationship with Wesley dating back to last summer when Walsh hired him to run Eddy Curry's off-season workouts.

The Knicks could also have the inside track on signing free agent point guard Luke Ridnour, whose price tag is too high for Milwaukee. Ridnour would serve as the perfect mentor for second-year point guard Toney Douglas, having been used in a similar role last season with the Bucks and their rookie Brandon Jennings.
The Knicks' contingent is hoping to have a verbal commitment from Johnson before it leaves to meet LeBron, but the Hawks claim they are prepared to offer Johnson a max contract, which is $30 million more than the Knicks can offer. The Knicks are also hoping to sit down with Amare Stoudemire before they leave the West Coast.
When the Knicks do meet with James, the two-time MVP will be joined by his business manager, Maverick Carter, and his agent, Leon Rose. Tuesday, Carter was quoted in the New York Times saying that NBA power broker William Wesley, otherwise known as "World Wide Wes," will not sit in on the meeting and that "Wes has nothing to do with where he goes."
Wesley's exclusion could be a bad sign for the Bulls, the team believed to be the one Wesley is trying to convince James to join. However, the Knicks also have a relationship with Wesley dating back to last summer when Walsh hired him to run Eddy Curry's off-season workouts.
Carter is James' childhood friend, and several people close to him believe he would prefer to see James remain in Cleveland.

2010 NBA MOCK DRAFT: DRAFT DAY SUPRISE TOP 14 PICKS
It's a crazy notion, I know. Especially with all the buzz since before John Wall even declared that he'd be the top pick.
But it's an interesting thought. What if, at the last minute, the Wizards decided to keep Gilbert Arenas as their point guard, and viewed Evan Turner as the game-changer they need to get back to a competitive level?
Or what if the Nets were giving us all a head-fake this whole time, and wanted nothing to do with either Derrick Favors or Wesley Johnson?
Unlikely, yes, but in an NBA Draft that is never easily predictable with quickly rising and falling prospect and draft-day trades, this line of thinking at least deserves a second look.
Read on for a bizarre NBA Lottery that could happen if some of the NBA GM's quickly lose their minds:
1. Washington Wizards—Evan Turner , G/F, Ohio State
Either the Wizards like Arenas more than you do, or they trade him and land a different point guard to be their guy of the future. If either of those ring true, Turner could be the pick.
We're not saying he will be the pick, but it's interesting the fathom.
2. Philadelphia 76ers—John Wall, PG, Kentucky
Do you really think Louis Williams or Jrue Holiday have Philly's full backing right now? Holiday might have some potential, but Williams is a shoot-first scorer, and if Wall is magically here, there is no way the 76ers let him drop.
Of course it won't happen, but you know that Philadelphia would go crazy over a truly elite point guard.
3. New Jersey Nets—DeMarcus Cousins, F/C, Kentucky
Since the Nets are thinking illogically and trying to grab Wesley Johnson and hoping they can sign a big-name free agent to man the post with Brook Lopez, I'll be the one to spin some logic here.
They don't need Johnson. At least, not as bad as they need another inside presence that can really balance their offense and defense out. The Kings love Cousins and Cousins loves the Pistons. But what if the Nets were really enamored with Cousins this whole time? That might shake things up a bit.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves—Wesley Johnson, SF, Syracuse
Derrick Favors is a big man with big talent, but he's not nearly as polished as Wesley Johnson. Minnesota hasn't been shy about wanting to trade Al Jefferson, which means they could land an expiring contract much like Troy Murphy's, and they wouldn't be in desperate need of an inside man in 2010-11.
That would make it extremely easy for them to snatch Johnson with no regrets. After all, they could really use an upgrade over their underwhelming wing production.

Favors is too talented and has too much talent to slide, even in a "never going to happen" mock draft.

6. Golden State Warriors—Ekpe Udoh , PF, Baylor
It both makes sense and is all sorts of crazy. Rumors suggest that the Warriors will make the smart choice and grab the more reliable Greg Monroe, or take a stab at a versatile forward in Wake Forest's Al-Farouq Aminu.
But other news has them loving Ekpe Udoh, a guy that wasn't even necessarily a top-20 pick a few weeks ago.
7. Detroit Pistons—Greg Monroe , F/C, Georgetown
All of this talk about Ed Davis and Cole Aldrich is just irritating. Even more so when the Pistons see their second favorite man, Greg Monroe, slipping to the seventh spot.
Yes, if Aldrich and Davis are the best available, it's probably between them, but not if Monroe or Cousins fall here. In an illogical mock draft, this is just one of those picks that is too logical to not pencil in.
8. Los Angeles Clippers—Al-Farouq Aminu , SF, Wake Forest
The Clippers draft badly. Usually. And even if they don't, they somehow get a guy who will get hurt or doesn't necessarily have a true position.
That's why I'm going out on a limb and saying the trend stops here, and they actually make a sensible pick for once.
Aminu is a well-balanced player with a nice game, and he still has a lot of potential. It's arguable that he shouldn't even be this far down, but if he is, even the Clippers know better than to let him slip through their fingers.
9. Utah Jazz—Patrick Patterson , PF, Kentucky
I know everyone wants to see Luke Babbitt here, but the Jazz need to make sense of the whole "losing Carlos Boozer" thing. If he jets (and he will), they need someone to replace him.
Let's see, draft Luke Babbitt to replace Kyle Korver, or draft a stud to replace Boozer? As much as I love Babbitt's offensive game and potential, you can't pass up an under-rated beast like Patterson.
10. Indiana Pacers—Gordon Hayward , G/F, Butler
Larry Bird and Co. can try to hide the smiles all they want, but this "trading the 10th pick" talk is a huge joke.
Hayward loves Indiana, and Indiana loves Hayward. Unless someone snags him early, this story only has one ending.
11. New Orleans Hornets—Paul George, SF, Fresno State
See how this ridiculous mock is shaking things up? Cole Aldrich, Luke Babbitt, and Ed Davis are all slipping a bit more than "experts" had predicted.
The funny thing is, even if the draft goes as many experts plan, George should still be available here. There's talk that the Hornets want to trade this pick, Chris Paul, and their entire franchise (in a sense), but if they stick here, George's offensive ability and potential are a perfect fit. Sit back down, Peja Stojakovic.
12. Memphis Grizzlies—Luke Babbitt , G/F, Nevada
Memphis could really use an insurance policy for the guy who needs a major attitude adjustment, Zach Randolph, but they also need to be weary of losing Rudy Gay.
If he does jet, Babbitt should be able to step in and take over as the number three scoring option behind Randolph and O.J. Mayo.
13. Toronto Raptors—Ed Davis , PF, North Carolina
Here's another pick that makes way too much sense to not happen. If Davis is here, the Raptors need to think about replacing the obviously departing Chris Bosh.
They could consider grabbing Cole Aldrich at center or Daniel Orton to play either position, but Davis has seen his stock rise quite a bit, and seems a lock to land in the Lottery.
14. Houston Rockets—Cole Aldrich , C, Kansas
Everyone keeps talking about Aldrich being a bust because his lack of elite offensive ability. The guy is a blocking machine, and once he starts learning angles better, he'll be cleaning glass better than Mr. Clean.
The fact is, no one knows what to think about Yao Ming these days, and the Rockets are all about defense, which makes this pick a no-brainer. Besides, Houston has Aaron Brooks, Kevin Martin, and Ming (if he returns) for offense. Aldrich can simply locate his role as a defender.

Allen Iverson Facing Gambling, Alcohol And Famliy Problems

His closest confidant asked the basketball world to pray for Allen Iverson, as if no one has all these years while seeing this train wreck coming.
He acted as if the former 76ers star hadn't needed a significant dose of prayer, luck, and divine intervention until now.
And as the rest of us are forced to bear witness to a disintegration, the rapid decline of a career clearly lacking nurturing, the time has arrived for Iverson's inner circle to stand up and be counted, to provide some semblance of tough love - by any means necessary.
Unless those people are willing to write his epitaph instead.
Just listening to Gary Moore, Iverson's business manager and the person he trusts most, they may be doing so very soon.
Allen Iverson is in trouble, folks, deep trouble. The combination of alcohol and gambling - and a once-promising career in tatters because of the first two - won't culminate in anything short of disaster if help does not arrive in short order.
If numerous NBA sources are telling the truth - and there's no reason to believe they'd do otherwise in a situation of this magnitude - Iverson will either drink himself into oblivion or gamble his life away.
Moore, ever the protector, would never admit as much, of course. But that's part of the problem, isn't it?
Iverson's wife, Tawanna, having hired some high-powered Atlanta attorney and filed for a divorce last week, does not help matters. Nor does it help that she's already separated from her husband, with custody of their five kids and seeking both alimony and child support.
When you consider Iverson's well-known penchant for alcohol and his banishment from casinos in Detroit and Atlantic City, if disgust and sadness don't come to mind, at least one question does:
Where is Pat Croce when you need him? Or Iverson's coach at Georgetown, John Thompson?
Where is the person with the ideal combination of compassion and toughness who would shelter Iverson at the same time he's holding his feet to the flames? Someone whose vested interest is in Iverson's well-being, someone who doesn't need his money or cachet?
In other words, someone he does not have in his camp right now. Or someone who has an impact, and needs to utilize it.
"I think there's one guy, and his name is John Thompson," said former Temple basketball coach John Chaney, noted for saving souls as much as winning basketball games throughout his illustrious career. "John is the one guy who'll have a chance of slowing this train wreck down, who could wrap his arms around Iverson and have an impact, because clearly it has not been done. But there's still this one question: Will [Iverson] listen?
"See, too many of our athletes give lip service when someone is trying to help them. And as soon as you leave them, they find themselves dealing with self-preservation and denial. It's an athlete's biggest problem to overcome.
"When you were young and vital, there were a lot of hit songs on that side of the record," Chaney said. "With Iverson, there are no more hit songs on that side of the record. You've got to accept the fact that you've danced and boogied. Now that they've flipped it over and ain't nobody dancing anymore, it's over!
"The ball is deflated. So now you have to find another life for yourself."
Iverson's NBA life may be over, but he and the folks he keeps close to him don't seem to realize it.
Take the more than $200 million he has earned in his career, subtract Uncle Sam's take, alimony, child support for five kids, and no millions forthcoming, then ask yourself what the 6-foot guard has left.
With his lifestyle, his mistakes, his lack of preparation for a life beyond the glory.
Talk to anyone remotely associated with Iverson and they can't deny that he is ill-prepared for a post-basketball career. His cohorts still look to him as that mercurial box-office star who won four scoring titles and a league MVP award, not as someone who simply dreams about those days right now.
The one advantage Iverson acknowledged having all of these years was a wife about whom he publicly said, "I'd die for her. . . . I'd die without her." Now, she essentially has said, "Go right ahead."
No wonder Moore said, "Pray."
