Buffalo Bills Training Camp Day 5 "Bills Sign Wood And Byrd"

The Buffalo Bills got one of there first round draft picks under contract as Offensive Linemen Eric Wood signed his contract and headed straight to practice. It has been a long few days Wood told the Bills local media. My intentions were not to holdout, but that is just kind of the way it happened. That is not my style, but it is what it is. I want to thank Mr. Wilson and Mr. Overdorf for all there hard work to get me in camp, even if it is a few days late. After missing seven practices the Louisville product is eager to get going as he was crawling up the walls knowing that his team was practicing without him. Wood expected to compete with the veteran Seth McKinney at Right guard in much the same way as a fellow rookie Andy Levitre has been competing with curt chambers for the Left Guard position ever since he arrived in camp Monday. The Bills also, signed the Second round pick Jarius Byrd but he will not be taking the field with his teammates right away. Byrd was placed on the Active Non-Football injury list. He still counts toward the active roster, but will not be participating In practice right away. The Oregon product missed all the team spring workouts due to his schools late final exams. It forced Byrd to miss valuable time on he field, especially since he is transitioning from Cornerback in college to a safety with the Bills. But in mid-June Byrd spent a couple of weeks at One Bills Drive studying up on Perry Fewell's Defense Scheme with Defensive backs coach George Catavolos. To make room for Byrd on the roster the Bills also placed wide receiver P. K. Sam on the waived/injured list. The highlights from Bills practice was the play of their defensive backs. Terrance McGee had his best day of practice with a pair of pass break-ups on throws intended to Terrell Owens. McGee said it was there intention to be more aggressive in light of all the double moves the receivers were throwing at them. Defending against the like of Owens, Evans and Parrish has raised the level of the Bills secondary. Fellow starting Bills Cornerback Ledios McKelvin made his first big play of training camp pulling in a over the shoulder interception in the end zone on a pass from Trent Edwards. But McKelvin had to pull himself out of practice after straining his left quad. Ko Simpson could have had his second interception of training camp but he could not hold on to the wet ball. The Bills Defense had strong day stopping the Bills Offense on the final two-minute drive when Trent Edwards threw a check down pass to Fred Jackson who was well short of the first down. The surprise of the camp Ellis Lankster got some second team reps. with the defense. The Bills also signed Free Agent Shaine Smith on Wednesday. I have been working hard in the off season all in need is a opportunity to showcase my skills. said Smith after a walk through practice Wednesday mourning. Smith 6' 2 189 spent last year training camp with St. Louis Rams, but not make the final roster. The Hofstra product was on the New York Jets Practice squad in 2007. He will wear jersey number 87 for the Bills. The Bills will practice under the lights Thursday night
